i would like to travel for thousands of miles without seeing a stop sign of traffic light of any sign of human life i would like to comb my hair behind my dirty ears and change face to smile at everything but i will never change those clothes i've been wearing since september the wind slows as i pass the stores and the streets i'll never walk in the soles of my shoes they are a wasteland as i go over the road and under this kitchen floor i would like to drive for millions of miles if my car wouldn't over heat or if i ever conquer my fear of the highway or gas jugging meet me where these power lines end and there this horizon line begins and if i'm late don't be waiting cus it's only for a day the wind slows as i pass the stores and the streets i'll never walk in the soles of my shoes they are a wasteland as i go over the road and under this kitchen floor i don't know when i'll see you again but i will see you again

digging up dirt from the rotting earth well hows does it feel in your hands you clean the floor and you clean the but but the town dog pissed on the couch again one single tree loses all its leaves in the heat of the summer pouring rain you went to church and you went to work but you were missing come dinner time i woke up in an empty room in a loud hallway in a full house of birds and cats and blind dogs and some food for when the winter comes boarding up the windows and hide in the shadows of a slanted roof of a falling barn stacking bags of sand to form a property line but it's no use not ten feet tall the market's overrun all the gasoline's gone and all the bees have run out of honey half and empty bottle and a chipped tea cup waiting in the back for when the weather gets rough i woke up in an empty room in a loud hallway in a full house of birds and cats and blind dogs and some food for when the winter comes hoisting up the coal from a big black hole when your hands are filled with nothing at all stuck in sand in an unknown land where trains pass by all through the night ashes o' ashes atop the embankment try to choke up the river and save the encampment in the middle of the road you burn all your clothes and it provides heat for an hour or two i woke up in an empty room in a loud hallway in a full house of birds and cats and blind dogs and some food for when the winter comes so i left a note behind the dresser with money and something for the cold.

he's a liar shaking in his boots in a dead parking lot with men in suits and ties to which he explains how in a corner store he lost all his money playing the goddamn lottery his whole family just got up and leaves him at the counter and there are stray cats hunting in all directions with matted unkept fur swollen teeth waiting at your front door i can't believe anything that's happened today oh no please don't leave this town dead leaves and junk mail surround this house there's bad luck forever all around please don't leave don't ya know that stolen cars don't turn around he's a bastard shouting "pour more concrete! mansions don't build them selves earn your wage or go home unpaid" gasoline all the wealth of the world in a burn barrel goes up in flames immediately the next day for what it's worth lets get married tomorrow just like we talked in the back of Cheryl's truck so many years ago please don't leave this town dead leaves and junk mail surround this house there's bad luck forever all around please don't leave don't ya know that stolen cars don't turn around well he's our father prancing in the alleys looking for something to sell and there's a freight train coming through the pine trees carrying steal beams lost souls and expansive jewelry for what it's worth i'd be running i'd be running along side to get on that train if i wasn't sitting here thinking goddamn! i can't believe anything that's happened today

wedding rings in a mason jar tucked away behind curtains and hidden from the sun i've seen your wounds heal more slowly than they did this time last year are you growing old my dear heading down to west Virginia hanging on tight to a ladder on the side of the train it's been almost a month still the bathtub leaks and something under the kitchen floor is dying your sister and mother hold a secret meeting in the basement with no lights on and emerge from the cellar doors with a can of gasoline and a wedding gown and she doused that dress just like a rag and set fire to the back of the yard in the middle of the night your brother and father stood my the window looking on in disbelief and horrified and your mother looked them right in the eye and struck a blow to their broken glass soul and she screamed we'll destroy everything you won't have anything cold cold cold cold morning running through the woods to the sun collapsing on the horizon awoken in the middle of the night to the walls screaming someone's uncle is out of jail when he comes for me i'll be ready with knives and scolding hot tea heading down to Alabama praying to nothing that this engine won't stop running a storm breaks out across the harbor the wind dies down and a fisherman harasses your mother

Mosquitos come out at night no other birds are in the sky someone here has got a knife pockets empty otherwise Meridian jailbreak hotshot in the siding everything falls apart one week before the fourth of july tip toe walkin' floor boards to a door nailed shut with crowbars for arms and an extra set of legs trace parallel lines to an unknown place where god and the hangman are making the same mistakes miles away the train fell apart in a plume of exhaust that killed the sky and out of the smog covered in coal dust riding on horse back he said there's nothing here industrial collapse this sink hole's gotten bigger with each passing day this fuel leak worsens and there is something in the air after the rockshelf cracked in two while i'm waiting on the outskirts in a house glowing under the moon looking for a stranger with nothing to do and hoping for good weather for the next day or two and hiding from the cops who've got nothing to do and hoping fro good weather for the next month or two miles away the train fell apart in a plume of exhaust that killed the sky and out of the smog covered in coal dust riding on horse back he said there's nothing here i've searched the mountains and i've searched the canyons and i've searched the ocean and i've searched the heavens and there's nothing there

the summer flood is coming

A mid summer fever has gotten us all restless she was sleeping by the river and woke up by the tracks in million dollar suit and a wax paper hat that smelled like rain waiting on a junk train coming down the valley a rag over a body that came back from the city covered in jewelry smelling of prosperity and sorrows he's a fucking liar we spoke about pleasure and we spoke about god and how he was put on this earth to take care of everyone "what i'd do to have a clean record at 21 stay on the trains" they'll catch you by your scent your scent they have dogs and i'm scared in comes a stranger 20 feet tall broken glass in my hand and nowhere left to fall and in comes a stranger the lanterns went out and the searchlights came on everybody was taking turns watching over the farmers son soon a shadow crept in and the rumors began a metal machine is coming, the metal machine ain't leaving way out west there's wishing wells in everybody's backyards i've seen them with my own eyes they use them to make money and stay safe but there's better luck down stream in the runoff i found gold i'm not guilty In comes a stranger 20 feet tall 24 carrot gold in the palm of my hand i'm unhealthy and i'm wealthy, everyday the fields a' turning grey, buildings grow and children run away and slow falls the mountain from the valley down to the trains down to the lake down to the cave and up to the head of the river where i go to rest my head when in comes a stranger

One hundred miles from the sea to the city there's campfires and ladders and bridges and dryin' out wheat fields and everyone here drives real slow until they're half way and when the sun goes down all the cars crash up the highways one hundred porches with couches and heart ached folks they're counting flies in their coffee and today is a holiday and everyone woke up early and tomorrow is sunday and dinner comes on a plastic plate one hundred hours spent working a week and still the man knocks on your door and says your gotta leave empty out the house and pack up your car and drive across town that's where all the poor go to settle down one hundred people all dancing around the fire the elders and witches and gangsters are all holding hands singing "from the evils of wealth we will withstand and from the power of the rich we will protect this land" one hundred miles from this land to that and in between there's poverty and slavery and all kinds of misery and you have the nerve to say they got what they deserve well thinking like one day is gonna get you killed and one day when i have grand children i will speak to them of how i grew up by the water not by the sea
